The corset
In the Victorian era, the feminine ideal was drawn with an excessively thin waist, creating a triangle bust. The waist was so thin that it is impossible for a normally built person to get to it. Women wanting to enter into these ideals of beauty, they then wore very tight corsets, in order to refine their waist as much as possible.
These corsets preventing them from breathing properly, Victorian women then made twice as much effort when they walked and climbed the stairs. They were therefore quickly out of breath. Over time, such tight corsets distorted the body of these women by tightening their rib cage, this caused many health concerns, as
deformity of the ribs, misalignment of the spine, digestive problems or displacement of the abdominal organs, these being compressed. It also happened that such tight corsets caused syncope or killed women by suffocation.
